Proverbs and Sayings

For the teaching of foreign languages Rudolf Steiner, among other things, recommended that "from the fifth grade on the teacher should acquaint the students with a language's wealth of proverbs and sayings."

Proverbs and sayings reveal to us something of another Language's inner nature and of the character of the people who speak it. Therefore they should be dealt with again and again in the Middle and Upper School.

Out of the numerous proverbs and sayings in common use in the English-speaking world, our colleague Helga Lauten of the Waldorf School in Essen has selected those which are particulary suitable for our purpose.
